Glaucoma

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions characterized by damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased intraocular pressure, leading to gradual vision loss and, if untreated, blindness.

Symptoms:
  • Gradual Loss of Peripheral Vision: Often unnoticed until advanced stages.
  • Blurred Vision: Especially in the peripheral field of vision.
  • Halos Around Lights: Particularly in low-light conditions.
  • Eye Pain: Accompanied by headaches, nausea, and vomiting (acute angle-closure glaucoma).
  • Tunnel Vision: Advanced stages may lead to a narrowed field of vision.
Treatments:
  • Medications: Eye drops or oral medications to reduce intraocular pressure.
  • Laser Therapy: Procedures such as trabeculoplasty or iridotomy to improve fluid drainage.
  • Surgery: Trabeculectomy, implantation of drainage devices, or minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to enhance fluid outflow.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Avoiding activities that increase intraocular pressure, such as heavy lifting or certain yoga positions.
  • Regular Eye Exams: Screening and early detection are crucial for managing glaucoma effectively.

Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent vision loss and preserve eye health in individuals with glaucoma. Regular eye examinations are recommended, particularly for those at higher risk, such as individuals with a family history of glaucoma or older adults.
